The Small Towns and Municipalities of Europe stand alongside the Ukrainian people

Brussels, 8 march 2022

The Confederation of Small Towns and Municipalities of Europe (CTME) – presided by Roberto Pella, ANCI first Vice-President – expresses the strongest possible support to the Ukrainian people following the dreadful Russian invasion that is currently unfolding.

The CTME was built upon the values of peace and democracy. European solidarity is at the core of its DNA. Yet, war has returned on the European continent. The CTME vehemently condemns this unjustifiable crime against peace.

The CTME supports all local initiatives to alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people. In some countries, humanitarian supplies are being gathered to be sent off to Ukraine. For example, in France, the Association of Small French Towns (APVF) conveys the donation calls from the national NGO “Protection Civile”.

The CTME, true to its humanitarian values, call all European towns to help the Ukrainian people forced to flee their country and, to the extent of their means, to welcome the many refugees leaving their land.

All members of the Confederation, from our 4 different countries – Germany (DStGB), Italy (ANCI), France (APVF) and Romania (AOR) – appeal to European national and local governments to act in solidarity and to cooperate in these difficult times. The CTME hence supports the European Committee of the Regions declaration, adopted on 3-4 march, urging “all local and regional governments in the European Union to support Ukraine in these times of needs”.
